Peking Ducks are originally from China and have since spread across the world form the 1800’s. At Green Olive at Red Hill, we have three friendly and docile Pekins who joined our flock of Runner ducks living around the dam. Of our three Peking’s we have one pair who are often seen kissing in the middle of the dam the other one was re-homed here at Green Olive but gets along beautifully with all our other ducks. Our ducks around the dam are protected by our Maremma flock guardian dog, Pisa.
Peking ducks are predominantly white with bright orange bills and feet. This breed of duck is considerably larger than most other ducks as they can weigh over 5kg. Peking ducks have an average life span of 8 to 12 years and don’t mind the climate here on the Mornington Peninsula as they have strong immune systems for both hot and cold climates.
Peking ducks are traditionally known for either eggs laying ability or high protein meat source however at our farm we have them as pets! As they are a very affectionate ducks they might even come and say hi whilst you are picnicking around the dam. Our Peking ducks are always the first to waddle their way over when dinner time calls, making loud quacks on their way! Peking ducks have a pellet food diet to ensure that the food can be digested properly through their round shaped bills.
