Everything You Need To Know About Winter Skincare

Green Olive Body HQ is situated in the heart of Melbourne, a city that we adore for its funky bars, friendly people and coffee that tops any other we’ve tried - there’s a lot to love, but one thing that’s hard to reconcile with is Melbourne weather. The spectrum of weather that we experience makes it difficult for our skin to catch up! As soon as you feel like your skin has adapted to the heat and humidity of summer, you’re dragged into the season of the dry and the flaking.

The key to getting your skin through winter is to keep it moisturised. The cold temperature, wind and artificial heating all contribute to skin becoming extremely dry, leading to things like redness, flaking, itchiness, cracking, or even conditions like eczema and dermatitis. No one wants to be spending the winter season in hibernation because their skin is so dry it’s nearly falling off, so here are some quick tips to keep your skin glowing throughout the winter season:

Keep your showers lukewarm

We know nothing beats the feeling of bliss a nice hot shower brings after being outside in the cold all day, but sadly, the hot water strips your skin of its natural oils, giving it that dry, flakey feeling. Try to have showers with lukewarm water and use a moisturiser or lotion as soon as you get out - this should minimise the amount of moisture your skin loses.

Drink lots of water

It’s easy to forget to stay hydrated when it’s cold but it’s important to keep up your water intake throughout the winter so that your body is functioning at its best and can help keep your skin looking radiant. Aim to drink 8 glasses of water a day to keep yourself healthy and give your skin that glowing summer look.

Humidify the air

During winter, artificial heating as well as the cold weather mean that there’s less moisture in the air. This means that your skin can dry out much quicker than usual, so consider investing in a humidifier to counteract this.

Avoid toxins and harsh chemicals in skincare products

Your skin is the most sensitive in winter so it’s important to be careful about what ingredients you put on your body. Try and look for natural skincare products that don’t contain toxins and harsh chemicals like parabens, SLS/SLES, synthetic fragrances/colours, urea and silicones. These ingredients will irritate your skin, especially in winter when it’s more vulnerable. Make sure to read the ingredient lists on your skincare and body products and look for the natural ingredients that you recognise.

Use products with natural oils

The natural oils in skin and body care products will really help keep your skin moisturised for long periods of time. Olive oil, jojoba oil and coconut oil are a few ingredients that are known to penetrate the skin barrier and provide the long-lasting moisture that is needed in the winter months.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!

Investing in a good quality moisturiser will do wonders for your skin! Once you have one, use it religiously! Keeping your skin moisturised will help ward off those nasty symptoms of dryness like flaking, itchiness and irritation.

While the first two tips are simple lifestyle changes that you can make immediately, the third, fourth and fifth tips may seem a bit harder… luckily, we make it easy for you ;)
